When To Replace Fuse Boards?

Currently, there are no regulations that cover when to replace the fuse box however modern consumer units are safer for your home and highly recommended. The thought of replacing the fuse board might be daunting, but it doesn’t need to be. Get in contact with us and we will make the process as stress-free as possible.

There is no set time for replacing the fuse board in your property, but they should be changed for the following reasons:

  • If your fuse board is full – there is no more room to add further appliances. If you want to add an oven or a shower room and there isn’t the space to add the circuit to your board, you will require a new one. When extending your property, this should be one of the first things to consider.
  • If you want to change to a safer fuse board type. New consumer units are made from metal, a material that is safer to use. Many house fires are caused when older fuse boards overheat and the old wooden backing or plastic container catches fire.
  • If you want to protect against electric shock – new consumer units have RCD, this prevents electric shocks if a live wire is touched.

How Long Does
Replacing A Fuse Board Take?

An experienced electrician will take a working day to fit a new consumer unit. This includes testing the unit once it is fitted. There isn’t much mess if the consumer unit is close to the electric meter, there should be nothing to clear up or redecorate at all.

If it’s further away from the meter then there might be some retouching to the décor required.
